The Modern House sold this remarkable five-bedroom property last year. Originally built in the mid 19th Century, it was recently refurbished in spectacular style by the renowned designer Niki Turner. The Grade II-listed house is set back from the road behind gates in a tucked-away location just beyond the centre in the popular Gloucestershire town of Stroud.Originally a large cloth merchant’s villa, the building (now divided into two semi-detached properties) is largely in the French Baroque style with beautiful external detailing including mansard roof, a moulded eaves cornice, circular oeil-de-boeuf windows and paired Tuscan columns. Turner has offset this elaborate architecture with simple, spacious interiors. Nowhere is this more evident than in the kitchen / dining room, a wonderful double-height space that formerly served as the house’s billiard hall. The soaring ceilings, capped with a skylight, create a space that feels like an industrial conversion.Explore our Old Meets New collection to view similar properties.
