The years 1965-73 mark one of the most important chapters in the history of social housing in London: it was during this period that Sydney Cook, borough architect for Camden Council, oversaw a program of construction, which ‘gave the borough a distinctive character and attracted worldwide attention’.
Architects like Neave Brown, Peter Tábori and Benson and Forsyth designed some of the most enduring streets and estates in the UK. Flats and houses on the Alexandra Road Estate and Mansfield Road retain a cult status amongst fans.
Tonight, Mark Swenarton, Professor of Architecture at the University of Liverpool, will give a talk about these projects, and the ideas and architects behind them at The Gallery, 70 Cowcross St. London EC1M 6EL.
