House of the Day: Flint House by Skene Catling de la Peña

May 26th, 2016

This article is more than a year old and may contain information that is out of date. Sorry about that.

Flint House was designed, in both form and material, as a response to its environment. Flint is a Neolithic material, found only in one geological seam in Britain running from the south coast to Norfolk, and is abundant on the surface of the fields surrounding the property’s Buckinghamshire site. The exterior of the house is constructed from stratified layers of flint (as indicated by the gradual lightening of the materials towards the top of the stepped structure), giving it the appearance of being gradually pulled up from the ground.
