House of the Day: Villa Tugendhat by Mies van der Rohe

August 19th, 2016

This article is more than a year old and may contain information that is out of date. Sorry about that.

Having met Mies van der Rohe in Berlin in 1927, Grete and Fritz Tugendhat commissioned him to built this property in 1930 in Brno, Czech Republic.

The house is composed from simple, clean lines with vast areas of glazing as was typical of Mies’ architectural style. The interior, however, was more lavish and received a mixed reception upon its completion. Brno, in the 1920s, was a hub for modern architecture in Czechoslovakia, and the interior design and furnishing of this property was deemed to be overdone, in contrast to Mies’ minimal exterior.
