Inspired by the snow across Britain, this week’s House of the Week takes us to Mario Botta’s house at Riva San Vitale on Lake Lugano, Swizterland. Completed in 1973, this house comprises a square plan concrete tower set on the hillside of Monte San Giorgio. A red painted pedestrian bridge slices through the tower at the highest floor from the road, entering straight into the studio. From here a bespoke stair leads down to the bedrooms and living spaces and ends with a covered terrace cut into the cubic tower form at ground level to take advantage of the spectacular views. Its unusual form is said to derive from Botta’s desire to create a contemporary monumentalism after the 1930s Italian Rationalist style. Botta is still a practicing architect, see: Mario Botta Architetto
