Charlotte Perriand’s ‘La Maison au Bord de l’Eau’ (‘House on the Water) has been built for the first time, with the help of Louis Vuitton. It is on show until December 8th as part of this year’s Design Miami.

Perriand designed the house in 1934 as a low-cost, high-design, pre-fabricated holiday home for the mass market. It received second prize in an architecture magazine contest but was never commissioned. The plans for the house were recently uncovered by the Louis Vuitton team, when they were granted access to Perriand’s archives for inspiration in designing the label’s Spring/Summer collection.

The house was made outside Milan and shipped to Miami, using hardwood and glass set on a stainless-steel frame with aluminium detail. It is on display, and for sale, at the Raleigh Hotel in South Beach.

Charlotte Perriand, one of the few female architects of her day, was a pivotal force in defining modern design, working alongside Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret.
