We recently launched a new Property Collections feature on The Modern House website, reflecting the diversity of Britain’s modern architectural heritage. As well as the best one-off Modernist houses, the Collections cover loft apartments, conversions, plots of land, new homes, flats on the Barbican Estate, Span houses, and much more.
Each week in our new ‘Spotlight on’ series a member of The Modern House team will select their favourite properties – past and present – within one of the Collections categories.
This week our Head of Sales, Christian, has selected his favourite Plots & Potential properties – refurbishment projects and building opportunities for modern-day modernisers …
Link House, Dungeness, Kent
This was a remarkable opportunity to purchase one of the most distinctive buildings on Dungeness Beach – an electricity link station built in 1957 that had planning permission to change it into a four-bedroom holiday house. The building was an outstanding example of Mid Century industrial architecture. Notable features included tropical hardwood detailing, some beautiful signage (some of which was in French) and exterior tiling.
The Rossdale House, Hendon Avenue, London N3
Occupying a breathtaking site surrounded by gardens, this three-bedroom detached house is one of London’s most architecturally significant Modernist buildings. The Rossdale House was built in 1959 to a design by Geoffry Powell of the renowned practice Chamberlin, Powell & Bon, and has been given a Grade II listing by English Heritage.
Lavender Grove, London E8
This was a very rare and exciting opportunity to acquire a detached contemporary house of approximately 3,370 sq ft on one of the best roads in London Fields. The property occupies an outstanding secluded site in a Conservation Area, tucked away behind the building line and accessed via a private walkway from Lavender Grove. The existing Victorian house was in the process of being substantially extended and renovated to a high specification, combining the charm of a period house with the high-quality facilities of a new-build.
The Ryde, Hatfield, Hertfordshire
This rare to the market four-bedroom house with off-street parking forms part of the renowned Grade II-listed Cockaigne Housing Group development in Hatfield, Hertfordshire. Designed by architects Peter Phippen, Peter Randall and David Parkes, these exceptional houses were built in the mid-1960s.
