Award-winning artists Langlands & Bell have created a new permanent installation for Piccadilly Circus Station to commemorate the iconic work of Frank Pick. Pick was the visionary London Transport CEO whose work for the underground – from its iconic graphic identity to the distinctive modern architecture which he commissioned for many of the stations – profoundly shaped the appearance of the city.
Langlands & Bell’s installation – Beauty < Immortality – which draws on many of the most distinctive aspects of Pick’s designs, was commissioned by Art on the Underground and the London Transport Museum, and will be unveiled on Monday 7 November at Piccadilly Circus Station. The station was itself a famed Pick commission, designed by British modernist Charles Holden, and is currently being extensively restored.
As part of a lecture series hosted by the Transport Museum to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Pick’s death, Langlands & Bell will be in conversation with Robert Elms on Friday 10 November to discuss the ideas behind their memorial. More details here.
