American architect Denise Scott Brown (b. 1931) has been awarded the 2017 Jane Drew Prize by the Architects’ Journal, a lifetime achievement award recognising her contribution to the profession.
The award holds a particular significant for Scott Brown, whose work has not always received the recognition it deserved. In 1991, Scott Brown co-authored the seminal title ‘Learning from Las Vegas’ with her husband and business partner, Robert Venturi. Whilst Venturi was awarded the Pritzker Prize for his work on the publication, Scott Brown’s contribution went unrecognised.
In the 25 years since, Scott Brown has campaigned to raise the profile of women in architecture, and was awarded the Jane Drew Prize in recognition of this.
