Rachel Whiteread’s celebrated installation Place (Village) (2006-08) is set to go on permanent display at the Victoria & Albert Museum from Saturday 25 March 2017.
The sculptural project comprises around 150 dolls’ houses, reflecting an array of architectural styles, collected by Whiteread over the course of two decades. The houses, each around a metre high, will sit on platforms evoking a sprawling hillside community but will be entirely free from any human presence. The work raises questions around everyday, domestic experiences and their overlooked or unseen spaces.
Whiteread was the first woman to receive the prestigious Turner Prize in 1993, and has received international recognition as one of the key figures working in contemporary sculpture, principally for her large-scale public works.
