The Royal Institute of British Architects has released research finding that Britain has some of the smallest sized homes in Europe, with the average one-bedroom apartment measuring only 46 square metres. The RIBA cited research showing that new homes in Ireland, Holland and Denmark were respectively found to be 15%, 53% and 80% bigger than those in the UK. While competition for land and its high prices are a factor, another reason behind the tightness of space in contrast to other European housing models is the way the British sell homes by the number of bedrooms, rather than overall floor area.
