This article is more than a year old and may contain information that is out of date. Sorry about that.
Packed with photographer Simon Phipps’s beautifully-shot black and white images, ‘Brutal London’ offers an exploration of the post-war modernist architecture of London.
The author says, ‘The image provided by Brutalism, an architecture of sensual extremes, is often an extraordinary and unfamiliar experience for the city explorer. There can be something thrilling about the aggressive and brash vocabulary of board-marked concrete, exposed aggregate, hard-edged brick and heavy sectioned timber, the expressed palette which displays the truth of its materials and a disdain for the frivolous.’
The book covers many well-known examples – from Neave Brown’s Alexandra and Ainsworth Estate to Rosemary Stjernstedt’s Winchfield House – whilst also exploring lesser known housing projects and municipal spaces.
Brutal London is published by September Publishing, and is available for purchase here.
