This March the Royal Academy will host a discussion on the revival and contemporary reception of Brutalist architecture.
Brutalism has been steadily regaining popularity since the 1990s, and now thrives in contemporary media – from blogs and Instagram, to coffee table books and music videos. However, this discussion, will pose the question ‘why does Brutalism seem so at home in new media that are the very opposite of its material ideals?’
Speakers will discuss whether the contemporary popularity of the movement is grounded in ethics or aesthetics, and will explore what this tells us about our current situation.
