Prior to the massive industrialisation of the area in the 19th century, the peninsula was a natural wetland. However its proximity to Docklands left the area damaged by pollution and factory waste, until 1997 when part of the original marshland was restored and a freshwater habitat was created over four acres as the Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park.
As part of the ongoing redevelopment of the peninsula, there is a landscaped garden (one of the newest parks in London) designed by Thomas Hoblyn, with Alys Fowler and Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio. Meantime Brewing has also created a permanent hop farm on the peninsula, from which nine pounds of buds have been harvested – enough to flavour 10 hectolitres of local beer.
