“Overlooking the leafy New River Walk, this carefully considered apartment lies within one of Islington's finest modernist estates”

This impeccably executed one-bedroom apartment lies on Upper Bardsey Walk, a high walkway within Darbourne & Darke's Marquess Estate in Canonbury. Recently renovated by its current architect owners, Built Works, the apartment is full of bespoke features including a handmade ply kitchen and sustainable resin floors. It lies immediately opposite New River Walk, a quiet and peaceful location with elevated views across the treetops, and is perfectly positioned for the best of Islington to the north and Dalston to the east. It also has access to a large communal garden. For more information about the Marquess Estate, please see the History section below.

History

The Marquess Estate was designed by Darbourne & Darke between 1966 and 1976 for Islington Borough Council. Islington's first large estate, it marked the council's move away from high-rise housing and bears many of the hallmarks for which the architect they chose became so renowned, such as wide 'roof streets' and the use of dark brick.

In line with Darbourne & Darke's earlier work at Lillington Gardens estate in Pimlico, most of the housing is made up of terrace houses with small gardens. However, there are also flats within the estate, dotted amongst the irregular ziggurat walkways in a complex system of terraces and steps. The materials are predominantly brick and slate.  In 1979 the plan was restructured by Shepherd Epstein Hunter, who closed off many of the walkways to divide the block into smaller, self-contained neighbourhoods.
