“Japanese design and Scandinavian minimalism meet in equal measure to create a beautiful yet functional home”

Occupying a beautiful position on a private road within the mid-century estate Ferrings, is this exceptional four-bedroom home designed by Austin Vernon & Partners in 1962. In collaboration with William Griffiths architects, the current owners have reconfigured the internal plan to maximise the sense of space, volume and flow, creating a calm, peaceful oasis perfect for modern living. Original mid-century features have been masterfully combined with contemporary materials and bespoke joinery to create an impressive space spanning over 2000 sq ft. History

Ferrings is situated on a large area of land, off the private College Road in Dulwich, South-East London, and has been maintained for over 400 years by the Dulwich Estate.

In 1954, Austin Vernon & Partners were called on to design a scheme that would rejuvenate the Dulwich Estate. Vernon himself had formerly been a pupil at Dulwich College from 1898 -1901 and knew this area well and his uncle Frederick Austin Vernon (1882-1972) had already been the surveyor and architect to the Dulwich Estate.

The houses were designed to a high standard; large expanses of glass, open rooms and central heating were utilised. Also quite remarkable was the landscaping that was planned for the estate. The roads were separated from pedestrian areas, and large areas were given over to communal gardens and spinneys. The result was an estate that was (and remains) beautifully designed, verdant and peaceful.

Ferrings was built between 1962-1972. The house is described by The Dulwich Estate as ‘ranch style’ due to its single-story configuration. Houses on this layout are dispersed between ‘pyramid’ houses: two-storey, square buildings, instantly recognisable for their green copper rooves. The interior layouts are spacious, befitting of the location and evolution of lifestyle expectations in the late sixties.

According to ‘Dulwich Homes: A mid-century Oasis’: “[the] layout of varying heights and sense of place is still exemplary in the perception of space and sky’.
