“The Art Deco façade employs sensitive classical references”
Set on the eighth and ninth floors of The Grampians, a Grade II-listed Art Deco mansion block in Shepherd's Bush, is this brilliantly characterful one-bedroom maisonette. Interior spaces are defined by handsome original features, including pine parquet flooring and expansive Crittall windows that frame fantastic views over London. Designed by Maurice Webb in the Art Deco style, The Grampians was built between 1935-37. The designs for the block were exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1935, and the building was Grade II-listed in 2003.

History

The Grampians was the first part of a proposed string of blocks of flats along a disused railway line. Designed by Maurice Webb in conjunction with Collcutt & Hamp, it is an excellent example of a 1930s Art Deco block, combining the detailed character of the entrance forecourt with the starker modernist architecture of the rest of the development.
Originally intended to provide affordable rented housing for working professionals, it is a highly characteristic interwar development and among the finest blocks of this kind. The design for the block was exhibited at the 1935 Royal Academy.
