The Vertical Glass House was originally designed in 1991 by Yung Ho Chang, as an entry to the annual Shinkenchiku Residential Design Competition, organised by the Japan Architect magazine. It turns the classic glass house design 90 degrees, provoking questions about vertical, as opposed to horizontal transparency – the floors, rather than the walls, are made of glass.
Two decades on, in 2013, it was constructed in Shanghai as a permanent pavilion for the West Bund Biennale of Architecture and Contemporary Art.
