With a guide price of $3.5 million, Outpost is a one-bedroom house set in forty acres of remarkable desert landscape in the Sawtooth Mountains, Idaho, USA. The house, designed by long-standing and inventive practice Olson Kundig Architects in 2007, is constructed using concrete blocks, steel and plywood. Large windows on all four sides frame vistas of the changing scenery. Of generous proportions, the highlights include a 25-foot open-plan living/dining public space where varying ceiling heights and bespoke furniture create intimacy. Another key element of the house is the long, rectangular “Paradise Garden”, sheltered and separated from the high desert landscape by eleven-foot high walls. Within, the owner has planted roses, grapes and espaliered fruit trees. Outpost is a residence and a studio/workshop for making and displaying art.
