American architect Philip Johnson’s Glass House, built in 1949, is widely considered to be one of the first iconic examples of modern architecture. Drawing heavily on Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House, the design is notable for its perfectly refined proportions and its simplicity.
The house was part of a 47-acre estate in New Canaan, Connecticut, which Johnson built for himself. The Glass House was the first of 14 structures Johnson constructed on the site during a fifty year period.
