This week we are catching up with the Making Friends exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts on the work of British architect Sir Hugh Casson (1910-1999). Casson was trained in the school of British Modernism under the tutorship of Christopher (Kit) Nicholson and later worked with Leslie Martin when he came to fame as the director of architecture for the Festival of Britain at the age of 38. Among his work for universities and corporate headquarters offices, Casson is best known for the Elephant House at London Zoo, as this exhibition demonstrates. He did design a substantial amount of residential work, but sadly most of it was small houses in prime London that have since been demolished. Casson was also a great friend of the royal family, and designed the interiors of the Royal Yacht Britannia and rooms in Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle to modern blends of comfort and practicality.
