The Modern House is 20 years old and, to celebrate, we’ve teamed up with online marketplace Vinterior to curate a wishlist of vintage pieces. We handpicked 35 of our favourite finds (which you can browse and shop here) before inviting Vinterior into our HQ at St Alphege Hall in London, where seven team members shared the pieces at the top of their wishlist. Watch the full film above and read how we'd style them if they made it into our own homes …

Glossy Red Carimate Chair, 1950s, £650

“I’m probably a modernist, I’d say. I’ve always been about function over form, I love clean lines and ensuring everything visually is quite pared back. But as I get a bit older and explore my tastes, I’ve found that functionalism is meeting a lot of colour and playfulness for me.

“I love furniture that’s functional but also eye-catching, and that commands a lot of attention. What I love about this chair is how arrogant it is. It’s just so timeless and long-standing and I love the colour.”

Charlotte Gerrard, Sales Advisor

Brass Studded Coffee Table, 1970s, £1,500

“I chose this piece because of the warmth it would bring to a space. I love incorporating different materials into design, and like how the patina on the brass almost mimics a burl wood effect. The embossed detail around the edge adds a rustic element, highlighting the craftsmanship that went into its creation.

“It's a beautiful piece, but solid and unsophisticated in the best way – you wouldn't be afraid to put your feet up on it while you watch reruns of your favourite show, and it would look great adorned with books, flowers, and other trinkets. It's perfectly imperfect.”

Amorphous Chair In Cast Aluminium By Finn Stone, Signed

“I love the sort of chair that looks like it could just pick itself up and go for a walk. There's something so anthropomorphic in its form. I'm always drawn to material contrasts, and I can picture this amongst the warm wooden accents that appear throughout my flat. It's a little bit of fun, and it has a real sense of presence in a room. I think I would have to keep it away from the other chairs in case they got jealous.”

Nell Card, Senior Editor

Asymmetric Bench, 1970s, £795

"I was drawn to the simplicity of this design: planks of solid Douglas fir, with legs that look like fence posts. It's made from honest materials that haven't been overly worked. Plus, benches are so versatile; you can pack a lot of people on them and move them from indoors to outdoors really easily. They work in living spaces, hallways, and bedrooms. I think I'd put it in my front room – although I’ve already got an uncomfortable bench in my front room... If I had room, it would go on the end of my bed and would become a living wardrobe.”

Gunnar Jonn (1904 1963) 'Peace Day, 1945', £1,850

“I'm a big fan of collecting paintings and prints, and typically the first thing I do when I move into a new place is hang the art and then build the room around that. I also find it's nice to mark milestones, such as birthdays or anniversaries, when buying art, as you then associate the piece with a memory of an event or person.

“Because of this, a painting from Vinterior was the logical choice – I was drawn to this piece because I really like the colour and composition. I feel ultimately you should choose artwork with a mindset of 'will this look good on my wall?' rather than being too wedded to a period or medium.”

Sirio T Floor Lamp By Kazuhide Takahama For Sirrah, £1169

“I selected this floor lamp, designed by Kazuhide Takahama for Italian manufacturer Sirrah in the 1970s. I’ve always been drawn to its sculptural qualities and the simplicity of its design. It’s both unassuming and strikingly bold, and the design has a solid, industrial feel, while also looking like it could have been painted in a single brush stroke.

“The final flourish is a playful red button which glides into a satisfying click. My living room is a balance of bold colour and clean lines, and the Sirio T lamp would provide a grounding accent. It’s a functional work of art!”

Kai Kristiansen Black Leather And Teak Model 31 Chair, £640

“I liked the seriousness of this chair. I'm not usually particularly serious, but there's something about this that felt classic for me, and the structure of the arms gave it an interesting twist. I can envisage using this piece in a multitude of settings – either as an office chair, in a hallway, or as part of an eclectic mix around the dining table. I don't like it when things match or if they all come from the same era. I like a blend of styles and layering in the home to create richness and texture.”
